What happens when you try to watch something in 1080p resolution on a screen?

If I want to watch a movie in 1080p resolution on a 720p screen is the image going to be better than watching a 720p resolution movie on the same screen? What if I play in 1080p- would they look better than if they were played in 720p?

How do I get my PS3 games to display at 1080p resolution?

I have a 42" TV that is capable of displaying 1080p resolution, for some reason when turn on my PS3 with no game it, it displays 1080p, now when I insert games that support 1080p resolution, it changes to 720p, any suggestions to fix this?

the screen will be black if you try to play something with a higher resolution than the tv you have. there are settings on your game systems and dvd players to make sure it optputs the right resolution. don’t worry though if you set the wrong setting and the screen goes black. the system has a fail safe that asks you to push a series of buttons. if you don’t push the buttons the settings go back to the default settings. that way you don’t accidentally make your screen black permanently.

i don’t know why i am getting thumbs down. that is what happens when you do it with your xbox 360.

The native resolution is always the BEST for digital signals, it eliminates UP or Downconversion.

And HDMI is better on LCD and Plasma and DLP tv sets, because it REDUCES Digital to analog conversion processing on them.

As for your 1080P signal, IF you own a 720P TV set, set your game or your Cable box to 720P. That will reduce any possibility of artifacting….

You should set your game system and any other components to your TVs native resolution. You won’t get a better picture by having the system output at a higher resolution because it will be downconverted by your TV.

you gotta check the back of the game to make sure it supports that format. what ever format the game works best on it’s going to automatically switch to that.

IF games only support 720, you can still have your settings set for 1080i or 1080p, it will jsut downscale. Here is how to chagne your settings. IF it doesn’t work ,your screen will go black, just wait, and it will go back to the settings that originally worked.

From http://www.playstation.net
1. Check the resolution supported by your TV.
Resolution (video mode) varies depending on the TV type. For details, refer to the instructions supplied with the TV.

2.Select (Display Settings) under (Settings) in the home menu.

3.Select [Video Output Settings].

4.Select the connector type on your TV.
Resolution (video mode) varies depending on the type of connector used.

1. There might be a problem with your PS3. I have no problem getting 1080p on games that support 1080p using component cables.

2. Are you sure that the game supports 1080p? Some games only support up to 720p (Heavenly Sword is an example).
