Help needed in choosing a tripod?

I have a Samsung point-and-shoot camera. I believe it has a screw thread size of 1/4".

And then I saw this deal on ebay

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/TAKARA-1-5M-Tripod-SLR-Digital-Camera-Video-Camcorder-DSLR-Support-upto-2KG-/190590951278?_trksid=p4340.m263&_trkparms=algo%3DDLSL%252BPSSI%252BSI%26its%3DI%26itu%3DUCI%252BUA%252BUCK%252BRTU%26otn%3D20%26pmod%3D320778013963%252B320778013963%26po%3D%26ps%3D63#ht_4580wt_905

It a a tripod for SLR digital camera. And on the feature description, one of the line says "Ball head 3/8 inch", I understand what 3/8 inch means. It means that I will need a screw adaptor to make my point-and-shoot camera fit.

However, what does the ball head mean?

Will it be compatible for my point-and-shoot camera if I buy the tripod with an screw adaptor?

Thanks a lot

It means it twists, swivels and turns. It even means it’ll slant some distance.

Tripod threads were standardized years ago, they’re all the same size.

A ball head is the part on the top of the tripod that the camera attaches to.

However, there are actually two standard screw thread sizes; 1/4 and 3/8, with 3/8 being fairly uncommon, and usually only found on the real heavy duty tripods.

I am surprised the tripod you found has a 3/8 thread as it looks to be a fairly lightweight one. I would have thought a tripod such as that to have the more common 1/4 thread.

Hi Wei Lun

There are different types of tripod head available. Which one you chose will be your personal preference or determined by your shooting style. The most common for photography are pan and tilt or ball and socket. You can read more about the types here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tripod_%28photography%29#Heads

As for the thread size 1/4″ is the most popular size and most tripods tend to come with this fitting. My tripod actually has a reverese thread so I can turn it into a 3/8″ but I’ve never had a need to as all my equipment used 1/4″.

Just beware when buying a cheap tripod as it wont be as stable or secure as you might hope for. As you have a point and shoot which will be fairly lightweight you should get away with something fairly compact though.
