If your just starting out, I would recommend something like a flip camera, you should practice with a cheaper camera before you move onto 1080p (Video Cameras like that’s prices usually start around 300 dollars) Then again having said that, here are some links to some nice, affordable, 1080p Cameras

Without a doubt, the best camcorder you can buy at the moment is the Kodak Zi8 it records in 1080p, its a really good little nifty camera and its excellent value.

Kodak Zi8 is good, but there is also a similar Kodak PlaySport (Zx3) HD which is waterproof pocket video camera. Flip pocket camcorders can be your alternatives too.
They are all very portable to bring around if size is what matters to you.
Kodak and Flip pocket camcorders have very good reviews:

Hi Jules
Thanks for the comment and good wishes.
My video camera is a Panasonic HDC-SD5 (now the SD9 I think). It's a High Definition cam that records onto SDHC memory card. These are now quite cheap and easy to carry. I would go for this type of cam rather than Hard Disc or DVD recording, since they are lighter and battery life is economical…cuts down on backpack weight and allows longer time away from mains power.
Editing – Adobe Premiere CS4 is good but a bit complex.
Pinnacle Studio 12 is more basic.
You need a fairly fast multi core computer to edit HD (AVCHD)
Hope that helps !
